soon after announcing that sigur rós was on "indefinite hiatus", iceland's jónsi birgisson, released his first solo album, GO, in april 2010. not a far departure from his work with sigur rós, birgisson's album is full of anthemic / orchestral compositions, layered with peppy, lush soundscapes.

yesterday, january 15th, i was invited by the NAVY to embark on a submarine ride with other local bloggers (special thanks to my gal, @jbruin). a once in a lifetime opp, we boarded the USS HAMPTON (fast attack nuclear sub) just after 0:800 hours.
once inside the THREE level submarine, the first half of the day was spent touring this beautiful piece of machinery (and technology). our first stop, the weapons room / demonstration which included loading (mock) warheads into torpedo tubes.
fellow blogger / podcaster, @aaswartz, climbed into one of the tubes. it ruled.

last month, i emceed @surfridersd's 18th annual paddle for clean water.
although the actual paddle didn't happen (see below,) it was a tremendous experience.

There were 8-10+ faces on the sets and some waves were brushing up against the bottom of the pier. after 13 years, canes bar&grill, in mission beach, is closing.
a grease fire did not take down the venue (in july,) it was a failed lease extension. apparently, the "landlord," who also owns the wavehouse, is looking to expand his reach on oceanfront walk (to include a LIVE music venue.) makes sense, however, bye-bye canes...
an attendee / media partner for its entire 13 year run, i was (often) impressed by the caliber of acts the venue pulled (excluding van halen / iron maiden cover bands.) for example, this month alone, canes hosted butthole surfers, the melvins, peaches, ghostface...
