submarine ride

so, this friday, january 15th, i will be joining a crew of bloggers (special nod to @jbruin) on a fast attack submarine.

per LT. denise garcia: “this day embark will demonstrate to you the sub and crew’s capabilities and give you a snap shot of what it takes to be a submariner, operate a submarine safely, and the (unclassified) technologies we use to operate submerged and stealthily.”

a once in a lifetime opportunity, we’ll be the first bloggers hosted by the (entire) submarine community. my best friend, dave (a 20 year navy vet who’s NEVER been on a sub), is insanely jealous.

prior to this distinguished invite, my submarine experience includes :

1. the beatles / yellow submarine

2. the hunt for red october (with sean connery)

hunt-for-red-october-splash

3. finding nemo submarine ride (at disneyland)

as excited as i am about the adventure, i’m also a tad nervous. being a big dude, i get anxious in tight spaces and will be submerged in a steel cigar for 8 hours. any tips / suggestions would be much appreciated …

otherwise, i look forward to sharing this amazing experience with YOU !

Just keep cool, think of how much training it takes for them to go out into the middle of the ocean in this steel cigar for weeks on end. You're taking a field trip, minor by comparison, and for them it's another mindless day. Autopilot. You'll be in better than good hands. And if all else fails just keep singing, "I'm On A Boat!"

Hey Chris you've done this before..just think of it as back in high school getting stuck in your girlfriends brothers van for 8 hours ... hiding from her parents, when the brother said he'd be right back but forgot you were in there... No problem (@taylor900)
