unemployment line-up.
** UPDATE **
since the publication of this post, CA jobless rate climbs to 9.3%.
awesome.
According to recent reports, at the end of 2008, the jobless rate in California hit 8.4 percent (compared to the national jobless rate of 6.7 percent.) Needless to say, that number is expected to hit the double digits in 2009. Locally, thousands of jobs have been cut, and sadly, continue to be slashed.
A Yahoo! hotjobs submission, entitled Managing Unemployment Stress cites unemployment “as one of life’s most stressful experiences.” Written by a La Jolla-based PhD and creator of SMART (Stress Management and Relaxation Training,) the piece offers tremendous tips for coping with job loss.
In addition to,
Focus on what is within your control
“…focus on the things you can control, such as managing your day-to-day finances, researching companies where you would like to work, meeting with people in your contact network, and following up on job leads.”
and
Stay connected to supportive people,
Being unemployed can be lonely and isolating. Staying connected to supportive friends, family, former co-workers, and business contacts is important for your mental well-being and your job search.
my personal favorite,
Participate in activities that calm your mind and body
It’s easy to feel that you don’t deserve to enjoy unemployment, but taking time to relax will actually revitalize you mentally and help manage the emotions and stress of unemployment. Ways to calm your body and mind include physical exercise, drawing or writing.
Enter SURFING.
During times of uncertainty, dropping into a wave revitalizes me mentally and spiritually. Surfing also reminds me, after fifteen years in the radio machine, that I "deserve" to enjoy my professional transition. Given the amount of people in the line-up, I'm not the only one who has figured this out.

I was unemployed since December 2006, and I just got a part-time job beginning of December. I do all the things you suggest and they are all great ideas! I check all my websites and contacts for job leads; I visit friends and workout in the off-time.

Yep! I’ll be unemployed starting Feb 1. I’ll have plenty of time to work some some special projects then!
