superpumpkin.

smashing pumpkins + hyundai = superbowl. From Hyundai's press release: Hyundai Motor America enlisted Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin to provide a rock soundtrack befitting the all-new Genesis Coupe in its debut national advertising campaign. additionally, the pumpkins will debut a new song, FOL. suddenly, i want a genesis coupe. or, not. billy, i understand the need to make a buck, but, c'mon. first, reuniting the band without d'arcy/james, now this? personally, i would have preferred the actual (band) genesis for the campaign....

coachella.

since 1999, i've been announcing/attending the coachella valley music and arts fest at the empire polo fields in indio, california. needless to say, there's something special (dare i say, magical?) about this three day desert event. speaking of, being "big-boned," i've never been a fan of the heat. however, (every year) i brave the sweltering conditions to experience the music, art, energy, vibe, half-naked people, and after-parties. my favorite time of day? when the sun dips below the santa rosa mountains... before we continue, first some coachella facts: - pearl jam was the first...

20th anniversary casbah show.

thursday, january 15th, i hosted the "Casbah 20th anniversary" radio special on KPBS, 89.5. an amazing experience, here is the opening script from the (two hour) special: That was John Reis of Rocket from the Crypt at the legendary San Diego venue The Casbah. I’m Chris Cantore, your host of the Casbah 20th Anniversary Special on KPBS. Personally, I’ve been going to the Casbah since 1991, the year I turned 21. In fact, I anticipated my 21st birthday, not to (legally) consume adult beverages, but to attend Casbah shows. In the early 90's, I was blown away by the thriving local...

happy hare.

a @sdradio tweet informed me of the news: "San Diego radio icon and legend Happy Hare Martin died Monday morning." in 2006, harry "happy hare" martin offered (for free) his "talent coaching" services to my former place of employment. at first, due to the generation gap, the idea of working with hare didn't seem like the right fit. silly me. in a short time, not only did i gain insurmountable radio knowledge, but (more importantly) a true radio friend. the last couple of years, we would talk radio and family over coffee/bagel at the pt. loma einstein bros. truth be told, in a weird...

san diego super chargers.

after saturday's AMAZING chargers playoff victory, i reflect... in 1994, the chargers made their first and (so far) only super bowl appearance, against the 49ers in miami. a season ticket holder, it also happened to be my first year in radio, at star100.7 (where the 80's and 90's sounded better, hi star! ha.) a morning show producer/douche-on-the-street, i went by the moniker, chris the bagel boy. here i am pictured with the hoff in his baywatch (non-bloated eating a hamburger on a bathroom mat) days. in addition to prank phone calls, wacky street corner bits, and crashing...
